Hello there!
...depuis le comencement, tout notre discours a été une recherche de la connaissance
Platon 196d
My name is Ioan Szilagyi and this website is a work in progress meant to capture my main teaching activities and research interests. In time, I will reference and present here (research section) insights and personal thougths related to projects I'm working on.
Keywords: information and communication, semantic web, ontologies, description logics, knowledge engineering, reasoning, internet of things, big data, data analytics, machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, intelligent systems, artificial intelligence.
From a large perspective, I'm interested in the elements and their interaction represented in this extended version of the DIKW Pyramid (Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom). The first layer of this pyramid consists of Things that generate data.
At least, two main directions can be considered:
- How the things and entities are represented and described at each layer: the "ONTO-"; and
- How the value is added when moving to upper layers using various techniques and algorithms like logics, reasoning, inferences and machine learning algorithms.
These two directions are deeply interconnected and the representation of things and entities would directly influence the capacity of an intelligent system to generate new information/knowledge from raw data or to make use of the existing knowledge. I'm interested on modalities that enhance the intelligence potential of machines (e.g. perception, prediction, decision, adaptability) through various approaches (e.g. entity representation; logic rules; deep learning; hybrid data-knowledge algorithms) applied on a variety of real-world applications (e.g. education, energy, building management, transport, health).
Themes and subjects related to the representation and description of things and entities:
- Connection and integration of Things on the Internet and the Web;
- Representation of information and knowledge (for humans and machines - e.g. computers, software agents, robots);
- Domain modeling;
- Value and Interpretation of knowledge by software agents and its application to various situations (e.g. real world problems);
- Ontologies and Semantic Web (RDF(S), OWL, SPARQL, Rules, Triplestores);
Themes and subjects related to the process of value creation when moving onto upper layers:
- Meta-knowledge to create new knowledge;
- Inference Engines;
- Combinatorial Algorithms;
- Artificial Neural Networks;
- Machine Learning Algorithms;
- Artificial Intelligence;
